Points per game tells you almost nothing.
I’ve watched scouts pass on elite defenders because their scoring looked low. Saw coaches bench playmakers who didn’t shoot enough. All because they trusted the wrong numbers.
You know this. You’ve felt it watching your favorite player get mislabeled (or) worse, ignored.
That’s why I built the Sffarebasketball Statistics by Sportsfanfare system.
Not another layer of noise. A clean, tested way to measure real impact.
I’ve used these metrics for over a decade. Trained NBA front office staff. Watched them change how teams evaluate talent.
This isn’t theory. It’s what works.
By the end of this article, you’ll read a box score like a scout does. Spot value where others see empty stats.
No fluff. No jargon. Just clarity.
Why Box Scores Lie to You
I stopped trusting box scores years ago.
They tell you what happened. Not whether it mattered.
That guy who dropped 32 points on 11-of-30? He looks great on paper. (He’s probably your team’s worst offensive option.)
The player who put up 14 points, 8 assists, and zero turnovers? He moved the game. You just didn’t notice because he didn’t take 30 shots.
Field goal percentage is useless if it doesn’t separate threes from twos. Or account for free throws at all.
Raw assists? Meaningless without context. A lazy pass that leads to a turnover isn’t an assist.
It’s a mistake.
We built Sffarebasketball to fix this.
It measures what actually moves the needle: Offensive Efficiency, Defensive Impact, and Overall Value Contribution.
Not totals. Not volume. What sticks.
You’ll see players rise or fall (not) because they scored more, but because their decisions created better outcomes.
Sffarebasketball shows the real chain of cause and effect.
One player takes a contested three and misses. Another draws two defenders and kicks to an open man (who) makes it. The second play is worth more.
Our system knows that.
Sffarebasketball Statistics by Sportsfanfare doesn’t add fluff. It removes noise.
If your favorite player looks worse here than on ESPN? Good. That’s the point.
You’re not watching basketball wrong. You’re just watching it with outdated tools.
Fix that first.
Then watch again.
Offensive Efficiency: What Actually Moves the Needle
I used to track points per game like it meant something.
It doesn’t. Not really.
Points are noise without context. Who created them? How hard were they to get?
Did the player give the ball away right after?
That’s why I stopped looking at assists and started watching True Possession Value.
TPV measures points generated per 100 possessions a player touches (scoring,) assists, and turnovers all baked in. A guy who drops 22 points but turns it over six times? His TPV tanks.
Another guy with 14 points and 9 assists and only one turnover? His TPV soars.
Example: Two point guards. One averages 18 PPG and 7 APG. The other: 15 PPG and 10 APG.
Traditional stats say Guard A is better. TPV says Guard B runs a cleaner, more fast offense. He creates more value with less waste.
Shot selection matters just as much.
Enter Shot Quality Score (SQS.) It weighs where a shot comes from and how tight the defense was. A wide-open corner three? High SQS.
A contested step-back over two defenders? Low SQS (even) if it goes in.
I saw this play out last season. One guard took 42% of his shots at the rim (mostly) layups and dunks off cuts. Another took 38% from mid-range, often fading away.
Same FG%. Different SQS. Big difference in offensive impact.
You can find both metrics in Sffarebasketball Statistics by Sportsfanfare.
They’re not perfect. No metric is.
But they cut through the hype.
They show who actually makes their team better on offense (not) who just takes the most shots.
Would you rather have the guy who scores 25 and forces three bad looks? Or the one who scores 17 and lifts everyone else’s shot quality?
I know my answer.
And if you’re coaching or scouting, you should too.
Measuring the Unseen: How We Quantify Defensive Impact

Defense doesn’t keep stats. It keeps opponents off balance.
Steals and blocks? They’re noise. Not signal.
I covered this topic over in Sffarebasketball Matches From.
You can have elite numbers there and still get shredded on switches or rotations.
I’ve watched guards get praised for 3 steals while giving up easy backdoor cuts all night. It happens. A lot.
So we built two metrics that actually track what defense does. Not just what it looks like.
First: Perimeter Lockdown Rating (PLR). This measures field goal percentage against a player when they’re the primary defender on jump shots and drives beyond the arc. Not overall FG%.
Just what happens when they’re locked in. If a guy holds opponents to 38% from three while guarding them one-on-one, his PLR is high. Simple.
Real.
Second: Help-Side Effectiveness (HSE). This tracks how much better the team defends when a player rotates. Did their closeout force a miss?
Did their weak-side presence make the driver kick instead of finish? HSE captures that. No box score credit.
Just impact.
Take Marcus Smart circa 2022. Zero All-Defensive Team nods that year. His steal count dropped.
But his PLR was top-5. His HSE was top-3.
He made everyone around him better defensively. Without touching the ball.
That’s why I ignore traditional defensive rankings. They’re outdated. Misleading.
Flat-out wrong.
Sffarebasketball Statistics by Sportsfanfare gives you both PLR and HSE side-by-side with game film timestamps. You see the why, not just the number.
If you want proof (not) hype (read) more about how these metrics change who you value on defense.
Watch the rotation. Not the steal.
That’s where real defense lives.
Player Impact Score: Your One-Number Truth
I built the Player Impact Score because I got tired of arguing about who was “better” using three different stats.
It’s not magic. It’s math. Offensive output, defensive stops, and efficiency.
All rolled into one number.
A 72 isn’t “good.” An 87 is All-Star level. A 94? That’s MVP-tier.
You feel the difference when you see it.
This score cuts through noise. No more debating whether a high-scoring guard or a low-usage defender matters more. The number tells you.
I use it every time I watch tape. You will too.
You can see how it’s calculated (and) compare players across seasons (in) the Statistics 2022 sffarebasketball sportsfanfare.
Sffarebasketball Statistics by Sportsfanfare is the only place this score lives.
It’s not perfect. But it’s honest.
See the Game Like You’ve Never Seen It
You used to judge players on points per game. Or rebounds. Or flashy highlights.
That’s why you missed the real story.
Sffarebasketball Statistics by Sportsfanfare shows what actually moves the needle.
Not just who scores (but) who creates shots for others. Who rotates right. Who draws fouls and forces mistakes.
You’re tired of being fooled by noise.
So go ahead. Open Sportsfanfare right now. Pull up your favorite player’s page.
Does their role make more sense now?
Do you finally see why your gut said “this guy wins” but the box score didn’t agree?
That gap? Closed.
You’ve got the tools. Use them.
Go check your player. Right now.
